AWD vs 4WD - What's the Difference?
Modern vehicles are available with a wide variety of options for you to choose from. Depending on the particular mode you're considering, one of these choices may be between AWD and 4WD. Although some people think that they are the same thing, there are actually a number of differences between the two. To clear up any confusion, let's take a look at each of the systems to enable you to make a more informed choice as to which is the right option for you.
What is All-Wheel Drive?
In an all-wheel drive vehicle, the powertrain provides power to both the front and rear axles. Full-time AWD means that all four wheels receive power continuously. There is also part-time AWD, which functions mostly in two-wheel drive mode and can switch over to AWD whenever added traction is needed.
Typically, AWD operates automatically without the need for the driver to engage the system. However, you can also find models that provide you with more control options. Either way, all four wheels receive torque through a set of differentials, couplings, and clutches.
What is Four-Wheel Drive?
Four-wheel drive is most commonly found on larger vehicles like trucks and SUVs. This system makes use of a set of differentials in the front center and rear as well as couplings and transfer cases to transfer power to all four wheels at the same time.
A 4WD system provides torque to all four wheels as needed, and it is available in full-time and part-time modes as with AWD. Four-wheel drive also allows you to switch between high and low modes. Typically, this is done via a lever or electronic switch. The low setting provides the highest level of traction, whereas the high setting is useful when driving on moderately slick surfaces like snow, sand, or gravel.
