2018 Ford F-150 Trim Differences Explained

2018 Ford F-150

To serve many different businesses as well as individual owners, the 2018 Ford F-150 comes in seven trim levels. Beyond that, there are differences in cabin size, bed size, and engine performance. Here's what you need to know to make the best choice.

Performance starts with the 3.3L TI-VCT V6, which has boosted output to 290 horsepower and 265 lb.-ft. of torque. An automatic stop-start function reduces fuel use. A 2.7L Ecoboost generates 325 horsepower/400 lb.-ft. Newly revised this year, the 5.0L TI-VCT V8 generates 395 horsepower/400 lb.-ft. The 3.5L V6 Ecoboost boosts outlay to 375 horsepower/470 lb.-ft.

The basic V6 with a six-speed automatic is standard, but the base trim XL and second-tier XLT offer the other engines. Available in multiple cab styles, cloth upholstery can be exchanged for a unique sports cloth or an easy-clean vinyl. Sync with AppLink is standard on the XLT and optional on the XL. If you want the basics or a bit more, one of these two models is a good choice.

Stepping up, the Lariat strikes a balance between economy and today's favorite amenities. The 325-horsepower Ecoboost is paired with Ford's exclusive 10-speed automatic transmission. The Ecoboost has a tow/haul setting, a snow/wet setting, an Eco mode, and a sports mode. Shoppers can choose the V8 or EcoBoost V6 engines. Lariats have leather-trimmed front bucket seats or 40/20//40 split-style bench. With standard power-heat and power-ventilation, ten-way power chairs make both front positions comfortable. Drivers will appreciate power-adjustable pedals.

The Lariat piles on technology. For comfort, it has dual-zone automatic temperature controls. Drivers will enjoy an eight-inch productivity screen, a Sync 3 touchscreen, and Sync Connect with an optional WiFi hotspot. The Intelligent access system includes push-button start. The rearview camera system includes Ford's exclusive Dynamic Hitch Assist.

Offered with SuperCab or SuperCrew cabs, King Ranch models have a standard V8 or the optional EcoBoost V6. For an upscale living, these editions are luxuriously appointed. The interior seats use a special King Ranch leather which is complemented by color-coordinated carpeting and genuine wood trim. It has everything the Lariat has, but it adds ambient lighting and rear heated seats. The heated steering wheel has a power-adjusting tilt-telescoping capability which is further enhanced by memory settings and electronic locking. SuperCrew models have a fully flat load floor once the seats are folded. These models also have extended rear cushions for better support.

If you want the pinnacle of luxury in a truck, look to the Platinum or the new Limited. Each has its own style. The front seats are special multi-contour chairs, and the running boards are power-deployable. On the Platinum, some crash avoidance systems are standard such as the Blind Spot Information System. The Limited has every system that Ford offers, including a forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and auto brake. Limited editions open up the cabin with a standard twin-panel moonroof.

All Ford F-150’s have the ground clearance needed for off-roading. For regular jaunts on the trail, you'll want the FX Off-Road package offered on four-by-four models. This provides skid plates and other protections.

The most exciting version of the F-150 is the Raptor. It has an electronic locking rear differential and a Torque On Demand transfer case. A long-travel suspension is complemented by high-output Fox Racing Shox and bigger, tougher axles. Raptors have a special engine, a High-Output 3.5-liter V6, generating 450 horsepower/510 lb.-ft. of torque.
